Purpose

Purpose:

Purpose is a rather simple concept at first, but is essential when writing a document. It outlines the reason for what you’re writing, why is your subject important, why would it be worth reading. Without clearly stating the purpose of your work before starting, you may lose your sense what what you are writing, and what goal you were trying to achieve in the first place.  A great example of purpose comes from our engineering proposal, in which my group and I created a solution to address an environmental problem. In this case, we needed to clearly state what our purpose and object for this project was, or else in the real world a project like this would never get picked up. Though as the document goes on, it in its entirety is meant to strengthen our purpose in order to persuade the chosen audience.

Each and every time a document is written I would ask myself what is the goal of this. Similar to the audience, it helps dictate how you write. For example, you would have a certain tone if you were trying to sell a product or idea through your writing, or if the document is meant to be a public service announcement. These are just a few of the many examples where purpose has a very large impact.

From Spring 2023 Group 3 Engineering Proposal

1.4 Objective

Our main mission is to bring relief from the fear of blackouts to the state of California. Blackouts and power outages due to heat waves can be deadly for both the young and elderly when temperatures rise. In order to subside this problem, we propose to construct a wind farm to generate clean and renewable energy that will be able to supply the power grid with much-needed energy in case of emergency. This addition would increase the energy capacity of the affected area which in turn would decrease the strain that a heatwave would have on the city. In order to make this happen we will need funds from the state government, government approval for this project, and testing sites for materials being used.
